What can a company like yours do for a (totally unknown so far) artist like me?
-
What would be the relationship between an artist and their producer? Where does the producer's job start/end? Do I just end-up with the professionally-engineered master-copy of my record, or can you help me in obtaining a record deal too?
- How does the relationship artist-producer work from the financial point of view? This is important especially for people like me, who may not be able to invest thousands of dollars upfront, i.e. before getting some revenue from the music. Afterwards, obviously the situation changes, but how do I break this vicious circle?

You guys are in Boston, Mass, right? How could I work with you since I live in New Jersey, or California, or Germany?
-
In addition to a producer, do I need a manager and an agent? What do these people do for me?
-
Do you do the sound-engineering yourself, or do you just intermediate between me and a sound engineer?

My music is instrumental only. How should I market it?
DBE aims to help artists like yourself. We provide attention from
experienced producer Jordan Tishler to help you develop and refine your
songwriting, promotional material, marketing strategy, and, of course,
your recordings. Depending on your readiness, style and popularity, DBE
may promote your recordings to labels.

This is a complicated question. The short answer is the relationship
is whatever is deemed necessary to achieve a great recording. Often producer
Jordan Tishler will get involved in a project very early to help with
writing and arranging as well as the obvious recording sessions.
At the end of the recording process, again the plans vary from handing a mix
to the record company to continuing to do the mastering to helping an artist
promote the finished product to record labels. Often times, by the way, it
is not necessary and even wasteful to record an entire album before shopping
to labels. These are decisions Jordan Tishler can help you make.

Financial issues are always present. DBE and producer Jordan Tishler
attempt to help artists with these issues whenever possible. Help is
offered both by way of education about the realities of the music industry,
and depending on the artists' potential, by way of percentage deals in
lieu of (or partly in lieu of) upfront money. There is no free lunch,
however, and all artists must be ready to invest in themselves (what
record company would invest in anyone who wouldn't invest in themselves?).

Distance is also a detail which needs attention and the solution depends
on the scope of the project. DBE has worked with national acts from as
far away as Austin Texas and Montana. When a project is to be recorded
at DBE's Boston studio, DBE has a referral system to ensure pleasant,
affordable lodging for artists. Music Producer Jordan Tishler will also
travel to any studio of the artist's choice provided that suitable accomodations
can be arranged.

A producer's job is to help you make a killer recording. Any promotion
of you or your recording is extra credit. An booking agent will help you go on tour, but will be hard to get until you are generating a sizeable number of ticket sales (they get paid a percentage of the receipts).
Often entertainment lawyers are good for shopping to labels,
but may require payment upfront. A manager is almost always needed to
book gigs, arrange tours, and handle publicity, but they are also paid on percentage, so you have to be selling enough to attract them.

Many, but not all, producers are also engineers. Producer Jordan Tishler
is also an audio engineer, and often does his own engineering on projects
recorded at DBE's studio in Boston, MA.

Instrumental only music is hard to sell on CD. If you are aiming for
a mainstream audience, maybe you should try writing lyrics, or hook up
with a lyricist. You can always hire a vocalist for recording. Alternately,
you could find a small boutique label which will try to market "your
thing" as is.
An important option to be aware of is music publishing. Instrumental music
is often needed for commercials, TV, or films. dBE Publishing can help you
explore this direction - give us a call or email.
