What can a company like yours do for an artist like me - either just starting out, or having made a start and developed a moderate following, now looking to expand?
- How does the relationship artist-producer work from the financial point of view? This is important especially for people like me, who may not be able to invest thousands of dollars upfront, i.e. before getting some revenue from the music. Afterwards, obviously the situation changes, but how do I break this vicious circle?
-
You guys are in Boston, MA USA, right? How could I work with you since I live in New Jersey, or California, or Germany?
-
In addition to a producer, do I need a manager and an agent? What do these people do for me?
-
Do you do the sound-engineering yourself, or do you just intermediate between me and a sound engineer?

My music is instrumental only. How should I market
it?
DBE aims to help artists like yourself. We provide production by experienced producer Jordan Tishler to help you refine your songwriting, stage performance, and recordings. We furnish management services to maximize your touring, promotional materials and efforts, and marketing strategy. The third leg for independent musicians these days is licensing for TV, Film and Videogames. Our sister company songsforsync.com does just that! http://songsforsync.com/
We believe strongly that these elements are really part of one "ball of wax" and your can not succeed without getting all these "bears" in a row. It's for that reason that we've developed expertise and services in all three areas. We do provide licensing and production services a la carte, but strongly urge acts to put all three legs into place in order to assure their success.

Financial issues are always present. DBE and producer Jordan Tishler
attempt to help artists with these issues whenever possible. Help is
offered both by way of education about the realities of the music industry,
and depending on the artists' potential, by way of percentage deals in
lieu of (or partly in lieu of) upfront money. There is no free lunch,
however, and all artists must be ready to invest in themselves (what
record company would invest in anyone who wouldn't invest in themselves?).

Distance has many solutions depending
on the scope of the project. DBE has worked with international acts from as
far away as Austin Texas, San Diego CA, and Edmundton Canada. DBE's Boston studio has built-in artist quarters which can be used for free. Music Producer Jordan Tishler will also
travel to any studio of the artist's choice provided that suitable accomodations
can be arranged.
Obviously, management and licensing are more flexible in location. iChat, MP3s, and cellphone have paved the way for true freedom when working to support distant clients.

Let's define a few terms: Also, understand that these definititions are based on "old school" models of the music industry. We feel that many of these roles are so bound together these days that separating them into several people is not a good way to do things.
A producer's job is to help you make a killer recording.
An booking agent will help you go on tour, but will be hard to get until you are generating a sizeable number of ticket sales (they get paid a percentage of the receipts).
Often entertainment lawyers are good for shopping to labels, but may require payment upfront.
A manager is almost always needed to develope a marketing strategy, arrange tours, and handle publicity, but they are also paid on percentage, so you have to be selling enough to attract them.
As you can see you will likely need each of these roles filled as you progress, but the strategy, image, songwriting, stage performance, touring, recording, are key ingredients you can't do without, and each influences the other. It is because of this, that we arrange our services as we do, to cover all the bases.

Many, but not all, producers are also engineers. Producer Jordan Tishler
is also an audio engineer, and often does his own engineering on projects
recorded at DBE's studio in Boston, MA. On the other hand, engineering and producing are really each a full-time job, and best results in the studio occur when these tasks are separated. So, budget permitting, we prefer to hire one of our stable of talented engineers to assist JT in the studio while tracking.

Instrumental only music is hard to sell on CD or online. On the other hand, instrumental music is in high demand these days for use in licensing to picture. You should contact our sister company songsforsync.com and submit your music for consideration. http://songsforsync.com/
